Abstract/Description: Image shows group of landscape architecture students from the University of California at Berkeley on the lawn of the George and Florence Gibbs residence, where the group luncheoned, located on Via Campesina on lot 9, block 1715, tract 6885 in Malaga Cove. George Gibbs Jr. (1875-1950), visible standing fourth from the right, was a landscape architect with the Olmsted Brothers from 1905-1914 and 1923-1933. Standing third from the right is the group's supervisor, Harry Whitcomb Shepherd (1890-1965), Associate Professor of Landscape Design at Berkeley from 1925-1956. As stated in the Palos Verdes Bulletin article of July 1929, "Under the direction of Mr. H.W. Shepherd and Miss Jones, of the Department of Landscape Design, eleven students from the University of California at Berkeley spent the day on June 7th studying parks and gardens at Palos Verdes Estates." The students are gathered around Katherine D. Jones (1860-1940), Berkeley faculty member and an authority on Acacia trees, sitting in a wicker chair.
