Abstract/Description: Image shows group portrait of contestants in the first annual birdhouse competition, the cumulation of a manual training department assignment at Malaga Cove School. Students made thorough investigations into the habits and tastes of the various birds for which the houses were to be built and installed around the school grounds. Identified, left to right, are: 1. Bill Bleeker; 2. Keegan Low; 3. Jack Wallace (3rd prize); 4. Boyd Comstock, Jr.; 5. Joe Hatashita; 6. Spencer Moeller (shared 2nd prize); 7. Richard Yarnell (shared 2nd prize); 8. Melroy Hodge (1st prize); and 9. Jason Cedarholm. Prizes, consisting of three books on birds, were presented to the boys by Frank A. Vanderlip. The community birdhouse, held and designed by Richard Yarnell and Spencer Moeller, was modeled after one wing of Malaga Cove School.
