Casa del Portal construction, Malaga Cove Plaza, Palos Verdes Estates, California

Abstract/Description: Image shows street level view looking south across Granvia La Costa (later known as Palos Verdes Drive West) at the Alpha Syndicate Building (later known as Casa del Portal) under construction, designed by architects Webber, Staunton, and Spaulding. Visible is the west-facing façade of the brick building's loggia and north façade of the sally port archway across Via Chica. A truck is visible among piles of sand and lumber. Original occupants of the building included real estate broker I. Lossman (hence the building also being referred to as the Lossman Building), the local Boy Scouts organization, and served as police headquarters under Chief William Woosley. Casa del Portal was the site of the area's first nursery school, and during World War II was served as a Red Cross Center.
