Diorama of Palos Verdes, California.
Abstract/Description: | Image shows interior view of unidentified office building with view of diorama of Palos Verdes. Visible is the southwest side of the peninsula with model ships sailing along Portuguese Bend in foregound toward Wilmington Harbor, and mountains in the background. An architectural mantel inscribed with "PALOS VERDES" is visible along the top of the diorama, with a mounted compass in foreground. The surrounding circular room bears classical columns extending to the second story, with a display case of vases visible in background at far right. A medallion with a mother and child in bas relief is visible between the columns. Howard H. Towle (1891-1972), an early salesperson in the Palos Verdes Project, notes in his oral history (Palos Verdes Local History Room, p. 3) at having seen the model installed in the Auditorium Building (also known as the Temple Auditorium) on Fifth Street and Olive across from Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles in October of 1921, in an early meeting for the development of the Palos Verdes Project. |
