Hideko Kawashiri

She had seven brothers and sisters born in San Pedro, and one born in camp.  Her family had a farm with chickens, horses, and grew vegetables they sold on a street side stand. The Kawashiri family farm grew peas, beans, corn, tomatoes, eggplants, chard, onions, and green onions.  Hideko went to Richard Henry Junior High School.  After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hideko's father was sent to the Tuna Canyon Detention Center.  He was later sent to Poston where his family had already been sent.  At Poston Camp 2, the Kawashiri family were housed in two units.  Hideko graduated from high school at Poston in 1944.  She worked in the transportation department, getting paid $16 a month.  The Kawashiri family relocated to New Jersey where they worked for Seabrook Farms.  Hideko worked in a plant, her sister in an office, and her father was employed as a carpenter.  Hideko returned to Los Angeles in 1951 where she worked in a sewing factory.  Hideko married Tom Tomiji Shono in 1952 in Las Vegas.
