Murphy's Grocery and Meat Market, Malaga Cove Plaza, Palos Verdes Estates, California

Abstract/Description: Image shows interior view of Murphy's Grocery and Meat Market, located at no. 78, Malaga Cove Plaza in the Gardner Building, which was dedicated on September 13, 1925. Previously known as the Palos Verdes Market before being taken over by Mr. N.J. Murphy on Sept. 11, 1926 (according to the Palos Verdes Bulletin, Sept. 1926, p. 4.) By 1929 the market was known as Leonard's Grocery and Meat Market, and later Moore's Market. A long view of the store shows a cigar counter in foreground at left, and a standing woman behind the candy counter with shelves of canned goods behind her. Scales and crates of produce are visible in center, with a man standing near a dill pickel barrell at right. Signage for Del Monte, Hills Bros Coffee, and Iris Food Products is visible along top of walls. The Gardner building, built by W.W. Gardner, was the site of the first classrooms, which opened September 8, 1925, and library in the community. The grocery store was later the location of the Palos Verdes Water Company, and the Palos Verdes Liquor Store.
