Abstract/Description: | Image shows corner view of the Palos Verdes Market (afterwards known as the Murphy Grocery and Meat Market by 1927, Leonard's Grocery and Meat Market by 1929, and later Moore's Market), located at the Via Corta corner of Gardner Building (La Casa Primera), dedicated on September 13, 1925. Visible is a sign at the corner of the building which reads, "PALOS VERDES MARKET / GROCERIES - FRUITS / MEATS - VEGETABLES / ICE CREAM / CIGARS / LUNCHES." In the background standing on the brick walkway is Charlotte Cheney Bosserman (19101991), daughter of Charles Henry Cheney, city planner for the Palos Verdes Project . The Gardner building, built by W.W. Gardner, was the site of the first classrooms, which opened September 8, 1925, and library in the community. The grocery store was later the location of the Palos Verdes Water Company, and the Palos Verdes Liquor Store. |
