Abstract/Description: Image shows view looking south of the north facade of the Peninsula Shopping Center with a partial view of a Newberry's Department store sign. Visible in the foreground is a street with several pedestrians crossing. At right are store signs for Baskin Robbins, barber shop and paint shop. The Peninsula Shopping Center was developed by Jerry Moss and Palos Verdes Properties on a 30 acre site bounded by Indian Peak Road, Crossfield Drive, Silver Spur Road and Hawthorne Boulevard. It celebrated its grand opening in May 1961. The architectural firm of Gruen & Associates were commissioned to design the project with a mix of modern and Spanish architecture. Peninsula Shopping Center itself was part of the larger Peninsula Center development project on approximately 100 acres of land along Silver Spur between Hawthorne Boulevard and Crenshaw.
