Abstract/Description: | Hardcover photo album including photographs of Frank A. Vanderlip's aviaries located at the family estate in Portuguese Bend. Photos includes images of the "duck pond," Vanderlip cottage, ducks, argus pheasant, phalaropes, peacocks, swans, storks, greater crowned pigeons, saurus cranes, African crowned cranes, parrots, cockatoos and golden pheasants. Vanderlip, who purchased 16,000 acres of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1913, started collecting birds in the late 1920s. He created aviaries on his property and set out to collect different types of birds from around the world, employing a collector to bring pairs of birds to the estate. While many of the birds were kept in cages, Vanderlip also released many to the wild. In 1932, Vanderlip's bird collection were sent to the Catalina Island Bird Park which was created by Ada and William Wrigley, Jr., both avid bird lovers. Vanderlip was said to have one of the most prominent bird collections in the country. |
