The Takenaga family moved to the Peninsula in August 1925 and leased a lot on an ocean bluff south of what is now the Lunada Bay area (Ranch 29?). Two years later they moved a house to a lot nearby (Ranch 32?) where they lived until 1942. Tsutomu Takenaga also farmed Ranch 25 with Kay Ishibashi in 1941, taking over from his cousin-in-law, Nakaemon Hasegawa. In early 1942 Genemon Takenaga (Tsutomu's father) was arrested and sent to North Dakota. The rest of the family moved with other Japanese families to Strathmore, California, where they began to farm. Tsutomu accepted an offer from the U & I Sugar Company and moved with his wife to Corinne, Utah, where he not only farmed sugar beets, but also worked in various orchards. The rest of the Takenaga family was sent to Poston, Arizona. After the war, Tsutomu Takenaga, who had been working as an auto mechanic in Brigham City during the latter part of the war, sold his equipment and joined his family who had returned to the Los Angeles area. Tsutomu lived in Santa Ana and operated an automobile repair shop from 1952 until his retirement in 1990. He died on Dec. 12, 2004 in Orange County, California. The Takenagas do not appear in the 40 Families Photograph. |
