[The oil tanker Markay exploded on June 22, 1947 at the Shell Oil Company docks on Mormon Island, Wilmington, part of the inner Los Angeles Harbor. The explosion destroyed the tanker and berths 167, 168 and part of 169. Licensed merchant marine officer and port captain, Karl I.
