Diana Ryan McIntyre
Abstract/Description: | Born in Hollywood, California, Diana grew up in west Los Angeles except for two years when she went away to school in Santa Barbara. She met and married Jack, the love of her life in 1957 at USC. They moved to Redondo Beach and settled there for 6 years and had 3 children. Eventually they found their way to Palos Verdes Estates as it was a better environment for the kids and added child number four. Newly married and fresh out of school, Diana started working as an art teacher at Hawthorne High School until she started the family. She volunteered at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium for many years, then in the Mammal Department of the Natural History Museum of Los Angles. She was hired by two Cetacean scientists and worked on whale research for several more years. Diana was hired by the City of Rancho Palos Verdes before ground was broken for the Point Vicente Interpretive Center in 1983. She was the Docent Coordinator and Curator and worked there for 32 years and retired in 2016. She was responsible for training all the docents and was one of the main decision makers at the center, especially for its education and display programs. She helped John Olguin start the Whale Watch Program at Cabrillo and was very involved in whales and whale education. As a charter member of several scientific organizations, she was even the first education chairman of the Society for Marine Mammalogy. Today, Diana continues to educate people about whales, and enjoys whale watching all over the world. Location: Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Diana’s message for the world: “Attitude is a decision.” |
