Eleanor Sue
Abstract/Description: | Eleanor was born in Chicago, IL, the second of 11 children of Charles and Mary Young. Her father was an entrepreneur, businessman, and store and restaurant owner. When the family moved to Oakland, CA in 1945, Eleanor moved with them, but not before meeting her future husband Julius F. Sue, who, after completing medical school in Portland, Oregon, was doing his internship in East Chicago, IN, just across the state line from Illinois. After his service in the US Army Air Force, Eleanor and Julius were married in San Francisco in 1947. The couple moved to Los Angeles and Julius began a 55-year practice in Los Angeles Chinatown. Eleanor raised three sons, often volunteering for school functions, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing, attending musicals, traveling, and feeding stray cats. After a while, she went back to school, graduating from USC with a degree in Asian Studies with Phi Beta Kappa honors, and completed a Master’s Degree in Education at USC. Eleanor and Julius were active in the Chinese-American Citizens Alliance, the local chapter of the American Legion, and the Pacific Alliance Medical Center (formerly French Hospital). Location: Torrance, CA. |
