Sharon Guthrie
Abstract/Description: | Included in Sharon's happy childhood, listening to records of beautiful classical and jazz music is memorable. She loved playing the piano and, as a 7th grader in the prep orchestra, played the drums. As a 25 year member of Peninsula Committee Los Angeles Philharmonic, and participating in the Music Mobile program, her favorite section to introduce to the eager third graders is, of course, the percussion! Her passion for gardening led her to a docent role at South Coast Botanic Garden and sharing her own garden in two local garden tours. During her 37 years of Peninsula Committee Children's Hospital membership, her favorite job, among many, is "Sunshine" Chair where she creates small garden bouquets as a way to bring cheer to members. Sharon taught elementary school for five years, including two as a training teacher for UCLA. With the arrival of the first of three children, she and husband, Bud, opted for a new role: a stay-at-home mom where numerous opportunities related to their children's activities, such as Girl Scout leader, brought her great satisfaction. Charitable/Philanthropic organizations, Sandpipers, followed by National Charity League, both of which she served as President, later became an important part of her life as well. As an Ambassador for LABioMed, where she served as Foundation Board President for three years, Sharon was honored with the Spirit of Excellence Award and in 2011, the title of Director Emeritus. In May of 2016, she was one of three women honored at the HELP Gala where she received the Inspiration Award for Service and Commitment to South Bay Communities. Looking back to her high school graduation where she received the Administrators' Award, "In recognition of service and loyalty to school & community; unselfish, gracious attitude and devotion to duty and high ideals", her path, guided by her mantra, "Giving is Receiving", which launched her into a life-long pursuit of service and commitment, was established. Location: Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Sharon's message for the world: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." |
