Ken and Harriet Servis
Abstract/Description: | Ken and Harriet both grew up in the Midwest, though they did not know each other until they came to Los Angeles. Ken first moved to Southern California to continue his graduate degree at Cal Tech while Harriet moved to California to pursue her teaching career in Long Beach. They met through a mutual friend on a double date, and a few years later they were married. Shortly after, they had three children and moved to the Peninsula in 1971. All three children attended and graduated from Peninsula Schools. They now have ten grandchildren who live in Michigan and here in Southern California. Ken was a Professor of Chemistry at USC from 1965 - 2013. During his time there he also served as the University Registrar and Dean of Academic Records. On the Peninsula, Ken was on the Rolling Hills Estates Planning Commission for more than a decade, and then was elected to the City Council and served one term as the Mayor. Harriet taught elementary school before she married Ken and after that she devoted herself to her children and family while doing some substitute teaching in the Palos Verdes Schools. She also participated in the PV Hills Cooperative Nursery School and then worked at USC from 1985 – 2000. Both Ken and Harriet love traveling and have a passion for genealogy. Ken grows orchids, and they have a vegetable garden and fruit trees in their backyard. Location: Rolling Hills Estates, CA. Ken’s message for the world: “Try to get along with everybody. If there are people you don’t like, just stay away from them. Mostly you can find friends and get along with most people as long as you’re tolerant and accepting.” Harriet’s message for the world: “Stay connected with your family and your friends. Love them all, cherish them, and be happy with them.” |
