Jacqueline "Jackie" Mason
Abstract/Description: | Jacky and her husband Bill moved to the community in 1961 and raised their three children on the Peninsula. She taught nursery school at Rolling Hills Country Day for a few years, and then in 1966 she joined the local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She enjoys being a part of the community projects of that organization, and has been a member for over 50 years. She served as president of the branch and has received their prestigious Status of Women Award twice. In 1970, Jacky was an important part of a committee from the AAUW who wanted to do something about the environment and recycling. They approached the county with their idea, and before long, they’d set up the first successful recycling center in the United States. They were also instrumental in introducing curbside pick-up to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Concurrently, Jacky and her peers were pushing for the Equal Rights Amendment. In 1976, as her children went off to college, Jacky fulfilled one of her aspirations and opened a store in Peninsula Center called Purposeful Pastimes in which she sold educational toys, games, puzzles, and projects. She ran the popular enterprise for 20 years. Upon retirement, she decided to try writing plays for and about famous women for the AAUW Readers Theater group. Under her direction, her plays have been presented to schools, libraries, churches, and community groups all over Los Angeles County. Her sixth play was presented in March of 2018. Location: Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Jacky’s message for the world: “If we could just realize that people are people everywhere, perhaps someday [we] will be able to just be one big, happy family.” |
