Betty Kessler
Abstract/Description: | Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Betty was always fascinated by bridges as it symbolizes growth and moving forward. After joining U.S. Steel as the executive secretary to the Vice President, she worked on many interesting and important projects such as the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco that contributed to the development of this country. Eventually when she was tired of the cold weather back East, she moved west to warm Phoenix, Arizona, where she married her partner-for-life, Tom Sr. and had their son Tom. In 1959, they moved to Southern California and, after the passing of her husband, she became a secretary in the Solana Beach School District. As a single mom, she raised Tom and took him on long fantastic driving and flying vacations every summer so that he eventually visited 46 of the 50 states before he was 18. She and he will forever remember watching the Apollo 11 launch in Florida as well as so many other historic sights. Betty likes to remind everyone to always keep a good sense of humor, and to never give up. One very important thing that she learned while working for U.S. Steel was to keep looking into the future, be strong, and keep going. She is grateful that she had the opportunity to work for such an important company with good bosses that contributed to her personal growth tremendously. She is also so happy to have been blessed with so many friendships at church, school, and bridge clubs down through the years. Location: Palos Verdes Estates, CA. Betty’s message for the world: “Keep growing and looking into the future, and find the best way to help out.” |
