Joalyce "Jo" Chiles
Abstract/Description: | Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Jo moved to Southern California when she was just a little girl. She enjoyed the weather, the beach, and everything that California presented her with. After meeting her future husband in high school, he was drafted and went off to war when he turned 18, and she went on to continue her education in Economics and Political Science at UCLA. Through the help of her alma mater, she was able to get a job that she enjoyed tremendously at 20th Century Fox Studios and worked there for three years while her new husband continued his education at USC in engineering after being discharged from the Army at the end of World War II. Jo remained a stay-home mother for many years until 1971 when she decided to go back to the job force and worked for an industrial design and engineering company and eventually became their general manager. Around that time, she and her husband wanted to be involved in the community more so they started a tennis club in Palos Verdes, since they were avid tennis players. They also got into boating and predicted log racing. After Jo’s husband passed away in 1991, she continued to race and learn everything there was to know about the sport and maintaining the boats. Finally in 1996, she became the first female commodore of Southern California Cruisers Association (SCCA), having raced 13 races a year, every year, for 18 years. Location: Palos Verdes Estates, CA. Jo’s message for the world: “Our government can argue their points of view, have different ideas, but ultimately our political parties need to come to a compromise so they could go on and do their jobs of governing this country properly.” |
