Description
The oil tanker Markay exploded in Los Angeles Harbor. The port captain, Ivan Hogstrom was killed in the explosion. His widow Agnes was friends with my mother [Ann}. These are my mother's pictures, one of herself, and a letter from Agnes to her after the explosion.'

The oil tanker Markay exploded on June 22, 1947 at the Shell Oil Company docks on Mormon Island, Wilmington, part of the inner Los Angeles Harbor. The explosion destroyed the tanker and berths 167, 168 and part of 169. Licensed merchant marine officer and port captain, Karl I. Hogstrom was one of 12 unaccounted for after the explosion.
