The Palos Verdes Landfill is a closed landfill site located in the north-facing foothills of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The Landfill area consists of approximately 290 acres roughly between Hawthorne and Crenshaw. It operated under permit of the Los Angeles Sanitation District from 1957 to 1980. The South Coast Botanic Garden, operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation and the South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation, occupies 87 acres of the former landfill site and is the first botanic garden built on a sanitary landfill site. Ernie Howlett park in Rolling Hills Estates was also part of the landfill. NotesOriginal discarded.
