Rick Humphrey : visual essays on the Palos Verdes Peninsula

Plein air artist Rick Humphrey grew up on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Fascinated by the outdoors, light and color of the Peninsula, he began to sketch and paint at a young age.

The Peninsula of today and that of Rick's youth is in many ways much different. Though some areas of natural open space remains, over time the area has given way to residential housing developments and commercial spaces. The Peninsula was largely undeveloped and dotted with farmhouses and fields of garbanzo beans, hay, barley and other crops. Exploring the shoreline, hills and canyons and riding bikes around the Peninsula to landmarks such as the now defunct Marineland, Point Vicente Lighthouse and Malaga Cove Plaza was how he and his friends spent their days.

This exhibit pairs original photographs and other materials on the Palos Verdes Community Archives with Rick's paintings and reflections of a child growing up on the Peninsula.
