Bob Marshall family photos and remembrances of Palos Verdes

Donald E. Marshall, his wife Dorothy Yale Ford Marshall and their three sons, Donald, Robert "Bob", and Washington Yale, moved to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1931, a time when the area was mostly agricultural land with very few residences.  Mr. Marshall, an employee of Procter & Gamble was transferred to Palos Verdes from Ohio to supervise a facility on Terminal Island.  The family lived at 3805 Paseo Del Campo which was surrounded by vacant land.  They purchased a property above La Venta Inn where they intended to build a house. 

Bob Marshall, then seven or eight years old, recalls playing in the vacant lots and going to school with the children of Japanese tenant farmers who used to live near the Palos Verdes Stables.  According to Bob, his mother facilitated getting the Japanese children enrolled in Malaga Cove School.  The Marshall children were active in Boy Scouts which was established in Palos Verdes in 1936.  

The Marshalls returned to Ohio in 1938.  Bob recalls his family felt that Palos Verdes was the "best area to live in".    

According to Bob, his father Donald Marshall was the first person on the Peninsula to own a Leica camera which he used to photograph the Peninsula.  He turned a pantry into a darkroom to develop his photographs.  This collection includes photographs taken by the Marshall family and recollections written by Bob and his brother Yale.
